Free Claude for a year, paused in three days
Anthropic opened Claude for Startups to far more companies on October 6, then paused the two big perks on October 9 because demand blew past capacity. What happened, what founders keep, and what the episode teaches about building on credits.
1. What was announced on October 6
As reported by TechCrunch and CNBC, Anthropic expanded its Claude for Startups program around SF Tech Week. Qualifying companies could get a free year of Claude Team (up to five premium seats) and $1,000 in API credits, plus Claude Marketplace access and office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team.
Eligibility, per TechCrunch's description, was broad: a company founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two. The program page also says you do not need VC backing to apply. That is a low bar: a lot of people can honestly describe a side project or small company that way.
2. The pause on October 9
Three days later, Anthropic's official Claude account on X announced it was pausing the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers. In the post's words, Anthropic "underestimated demand," had "hundreds of thousands of applicants," and was re-reviewing applications.
Secondary sources add detail that I could not confirm on a primary page: one summary claims applications ran about 21 times the previous five months combined in 48 hours, and that many non-startups were accepted. Treat those two points as reported, not verified.
3. What is paused and what is not
| Item | Status (as reported) |
| Free year of Claude Team | Paused for new claims |
| $1,000 API credit | Paused for new claims |
| Already-claimed offers | Kept: "nothing changes" |
| Approved but not yet claimed | Under re-review; some may lose the offer |
| Startup Stack partner discounts, office hours, events | Still available |
Practical rule: a credit you have not redeemed is not a credit you own. Until it is in your account, do not put it in your budget.
4. Why a generous offer breaks fast
Think of a restaurant that announces "free dinner for anyone who says they are a chef." The only thing stopping a flood is the check at the door, and here the check was weak: eligibility was self-described and broad. Three ingredients combine:
- Real value: a year of a team plan plus API cash is worth claiming.
- Cheap eligibility: "founded in five years" is easy to satisfy and hard to verify at scale.
- Amplification: a tech-week announcement reaches everyone at once.
This is a general pattern in software, not just in AI: promo codes, free tiers and trials all need rate limits and verification. The sensible expectation is that the program returns with stricter checks (company domain, incorporation or funding records), but Anthropic has not said so.
5. What this means if you build on an API
- Budget on list prices. Treat credits as a bonus. Check the current pricing page for your model.
- Set spend limits in the Console. A cap protects you whether or not credits exist.
- Route by model size. Use a cheaper, faster model for bulk work and a stronger one only where quality matters.
- Check where credits apply. Per one secondary source, the startup credit works on the first-party API through Console, not on cloud marketplaces; verify before you plan around it.
- Avoid resold credits. Discounted accounts or tokens from strangers are a security and compliance risk.
6. What we do not know yet
Anthropic has not published how long the pause lasts, what the new eligibility rules will be, or how many applicants lose offers. The official program page and the Claude account on X are the places to watch. I could not open the original X post or the program page directly, so details here come from news coverage that quotes them.

1. O que foi anunciado em 6 de outubro
Segundo TechCrunch e CNBC, a Anthropic expandiu o Claude for Startups na SF Tech Week.
