Claude now watermarks its text — invisibly, and it survives copy-paste
Anthropic started embedding machine-readable marks directly into Claude's generated text on August 2, 2026. Here's how the mark actually works, and why "invisible" doesn't mean "reliable AI detector."
Starting with models launched on or after August 2, 2026, Claude embeds an imperceptible, machine-readable mark directly into the text it generates. Anthropic says the mark doesn't change the meaning, quality, or readability of the response — a reader can't tell by looking that a piece of text carries one. The company plans to publish technical details so third parties can build tools that check content for supported Claude marks.
2. How the watermark actually works
The key design decision: the mark is part of the text itself, not metadata attached to a file. A metadata tag (like an EXIF field on a photo) gets stripped the moment content is copied into a different document, pasted into an email, or converted to another format. Because Claude's watermark lives inside the actual sequence of words and characters generated, it travels with the text through copy-paste and may survive some light editing.
What you won't find: there's no unusual character, no telltale spacing pattern, no visible sequence to spot by eye. That's the point — the mark is designed to be statistically detectable by a dedicated tool, not visually detectable by a human proofreading the page.
3. Detection — and its real limits
Anthropic has been explicit that this system is not a definitive AI detector. A few limits worth keeping in mind before treating a "mark found" or "mark not found" result as a verdict:
Finding a mark only suggests Claude involvement — it indicates the text may have passed through Claude at some point, not that every word came from the model unedited.
Heavy editing, paraphrasing, or translation can destroy the signal. The mark is statistical, not a fixed tag — enough rewriting and it may no longer be reliably detectable.
Mixing Claude output with human-written text dilutes the signal further, and very short passages may simply not contain enough material for reliable detection either way.
In other words: this is a forensic signal for large, mostly-unedited chunks of text, not a pass/fail plagiarism-style checker for every sentence a student or employee submits.
4. Why now: EU rules and C2PA context
The timing lines up with growing regulatory pressure — most notably EU rules pushing for machine-readable disclosure of AI-generated content — and with the broader C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) push toward provenance standards for AI output across text, image, audio, and video. Schools, publishers, and platforms have been grappling with undisclosed AI-written content for a while now; an invisible-but-detectable mark is Anthropic's answer to "how do we make Claude's output traceable without changing how it reads."
5. What this means for you
If you use Claude to draft anything you plan to publish, submit, or pass off as fully your own unedited writing, assume that large unedited blocks are now traceable back to Claude by anyone with the right detection tool — even after copy-pasting into a different document. It doesn't mean every AI-assisted sentence will be flagged forever (editing degrades the signal), but it does close the gap between "invisible to the eye" and "untraceable," which used to be treated as the same thing.
